The mountain dwellers of the north and north-east are estimated to have a population of 500,000, if we can identify those who are still nomadic or semi-nomadic and for whom borders have no meaning.
Due to their isolation, these tribes are the custodians of a culture that has remained unchanged for centuries.
The primary occupation of all of these tribes is agriculture, and each of them tends to migrate whenever they feel the farmland in their current location is depleted.
Although it is gradually rebuilding itself, the majority of the population still lives below the global poverty line.
Families often live in substandard housing, often prone to flooding. Most children have never been vaccinated, do not benefit from any medical follow-up and are therefore all the more exposed to diseases.
Few can follow a normal schooling, because a large part of the tribal populations is stateless or their village is too far from towns and schools. For the most part, they speak the dialect of their tribe and not Thai. Many drop out of school at age 11 to go to work.
In Thailand, there are currently 438,821 people registered as stateless mostly belonging to “hill tribes” living in remote areas with limited access to information regarding nationality procedures and who in the past have lived without registration. or without an identity document.
Without identity papers, non-residents have no rights and do not benefit from any medical or educational support.
